This Week's Thrifty and Vintage Finds
>> Wednesday, June 16, 2010
This week while out thrifting I finally found myself some adorable chairs for my dining room table. We have a long table that seats 12 and yet we own only 5 chairs. I'm constantly searching to find affordable chairs that will blend in with what we currently have. While the two on the sides are fairly new, the center is older and all 3 have the feel of coming from an old farm house, which I love! I got all three for $14.99- TOTAL.
Next up is this pretty little pitcher.
It is handmade and marked "Chris 81" on the bottom- which is also decorated, a touch of flair that I find delightful! Tiger Lilies are my favorite flower, so when I saw this for $.99 cents, I knew it had to come home with me.
I love the vibrancy of the colors and the fact that every inch of it is detailed.
Add a few blue hydrangeas from my neighbor's garden and viola- instant charm!
Finally, I have this bowl that matches my Blue Heaven dishes. I believe this style was made by Fire King, while my dishes were made by Royal China. My godmother gave this to me so cost was FREE, what could be better?!

Vintage Thingies Thursday and another giveaway hint!

A few weeks ago I blogged about my thrifting adventures and the delicious display of antique insulators I found.
Today, in honor of Vintage Thingies Thursday, I thought I would share some of the lovelies that came home with me.
Originally, glass insulators were used to protect homes from lightening strikes. Then in the mid 1800s to keep up with technological progress, glass insulators for wiring began being produced.
The shapes and sizes changed as our needs changed.
And here's something eco-cool and SO ahead of it's time. Did you know that insulators were often made from recycled glass? End of day scraps and old bottles were often heated and then pressed together to make insulators (which accounts for color swirls you often see inside them when held up to the light.)
I just began collecting so I don't have any uber valuable pieces, but I do have a favorite. It is this emerald green Brookfield insulator. Not only is the color a gorgeous rich shade, but there is an amber swirl running through the middle and my favorite part- there is an embossing error. It reads "BROOKFIFED" instead of "BROOKFIELD" on it.
I plan on making something crafty with a select few of these very soon. It will be beachy, decorative AND functional. What could be better than that?! Check back soon to see what I create!

Springy, Sunny Sunday Shopping
>> Monday, March 22, 2010
Went out to some local consignment shops on Sunday afternoon with Ed and spied some really beautiful items. Some of them even made the trip home with me...
pretty little vignettes welcoming spring
Pink glass lampshades and doodads (wish my photography skills were better!) on a perfectly antique white vanity
OMG, I have died and gone to insulator heaven! I had to zip back to the entry of the store and grab a basket once I saw this!
Love this turquoise pedestal, but the $85 price tag? Um, I don't think so...
Forget spring, these shelves are beckoning summer!
Something about the blue on this enamel kettle
Craving this fun little bait pail, but at $15, it's on my watch and wait list...
In addition to the insulators I brought home, which I'll blog about another day, I also treated myself to these two beauties (soon to be decorated with sea glass!)
a funky flowery enamel brooch
and a canning jar filled with grammy's beads and baubles
Ohhhh, how I love shopping other people's junk, lol!
