I had another wonderful weekend of thrifting. All out, a total of $31 was spent for this terrific haul- scored big in the area of Pyrex, getting several promotional pieces
Has anyone else noticed how barren the consignment and charity shops have been lately?! Every time I go, the shelves seem sparse on vintage goodies- but my dry spell ended this past weekend when I added these pieces to my collection.
A beautiful yellow (0)503 fridgie, with lid, my first piece of yellow- $12, but I couldn't leave it there in such pristine condition! (put it to quick use with some red cabbage slaw!)
I spied her last Thursday at the consignment shop. The tag pinned to her cushion actually said that. "One Old, Ugly Chair". Poor thing.
And how could anyone call such a yummy shade of turquoise "ugly"?! At $44, she was a bit out of my price range, but the notation on the side of the tag indicated that the price would drop to $36 on Sunday. I crossed my fingers, said a little prayer and left her in the care of the shop keepers for the weekend. 
Apparently the applied stigma worked because when I arrived shortly after the store opened on Sunday, she was still sitting there, waiting for me.
I think she's beautiful.

So my mom calls me up and says "Katherine's kids are finally cleaning out the house. They're having an estate sale and there is the dining room set that is sort of Danish 50s or 60s looking I think. They're asking $100, do you want it? The cushions match your house..."
While my heart is screaming "Yes, yes, YES!" my brain is saying "You can't, don't spend the money. UGH Brain, you're killing me- NO, don't do it!" So I told my mom no, heaved a heavy sigh and went off to tell Ed about the fabulous deal that I had just hung up on.
The next morning my mom calls me again and says "Well, I made enough money yesterday at MY yardsale to buy the dining set for you. So I did. And we'll bring it down later this afternoon, okay?"
OH. MY. GOSH. SHE. DID. WHAT? OMG OMG OMG OMG YES! "I'll cook you dinner!" I shout. And with that, this charming little dining table and chairs came to live at my house. 
I am not really sure what style to call this, I'm no expert. Is it Danish looking? We think the wood is walnut, there is no maker's mark that I can find but it is really sturdy and in great condition for it's age with nary a scratch or ding anywhere...

It's yet another rainy, nasty day outside, the basement is taking on water and the schools are closed due to road flooding. So in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, let's look at this jar filled with goodies I bought last week. 
It's got all sorts of miscellaneous jewelry bits- I picked it up mostly because I wanted the jar but also because the sparklies inside were calling out to me. So when I got home I dumped it all out and started to sift through it. Certainly nothing spectacular but lots of cute things that remind me of playing dress up at my grandma's and a few stand out pieces that I found interesting.

Okay, so maybe this is stretching the terms "vintage" and "retro" but these windows are definitely OLD. I got them off Craig's List in winter 2008. A woman who lived just 5 miles from me gave them to me for FREE (my favorite word!) and she even drove them to my house and helped me unload them into my back yard.
So what does one want with a pile of old windows? Well, for me- it's another way to satisfy justify my sea glass obsession collection.
And just what does sea glass have to do with old windows? Upcycling. Wikipedia defines upcycling as the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. For my purposes, I take windows people are getting rid of and turn them into colorful pieces of art.
Here are some examples of pieces I have made in the past
My windows are all wood frame windows destined for the dump. I use paint that I find in the "oops" section at the hardware store and the glass is either sea glass gathered off local beaches or repurposed bottles, jars and glasses rescued from my own recycling bin and put into a tumbler to smooth the rough edges. The epoxy I use to set the glass is a styrene free product with no dangerous peroxides and no VOC's which means a safer environment!
I mentioned yesterday that I was working on a project for my sister. She commissioned me to make her an upcycled glass window to be given as a gift later this month. She's coming to pick it up this weekend. Here are some work-in-progress photos
The glue is still drying in these photos, so please ignore all the white showing through, it will dry clear!
