Beautiful Butterprint Pyrex!

It's been a busy summer and I haven't participated in Vintage Thingies Thursday in what feels like ages! I've missed it!

This week I wanted to share my newest Pyrex acquisitions. I've only just begun collecting vintage Pyrex so I don't have too many pieces yet, but I'm sure that won't be a problem for long! I am in love with all things turquoise and have decorated my kitchen and dining area with vintage (and vintage inspired) items in a turquoise, white and green color scheme.


My Blue Heaven dishes that I've mentioned a few times here were the very first thing I ever bought that started me on this vintage voyage. I got a giant box of the dishes for $5.
Shortly after I started collecting the Blue Heaven, I learned about Fire King (who made some of the pieces to my set) and then I started to discover the glorious world of Pyrex and all the colors and patterns- ooooooh ahhhhhhh Pyrex! So now that I am on the hunt for it constantly, my mother hunts for it for me as well!

Last week, mom arrived unexpectedly with a brown bag filled with goodies for me. Though they were tightly wrapped in newspaper, they were clearly nesting inside each other. Let me tell you, I couldn't get the paper off of them fast enough!

She found an entire set of the Butterprint Cinderella nest bowls in near mint condition (there is one small 1/4 inch metal mark on the largest bowl) for a whopping $15! And they are all for me! I couldn't be more thrilled. Unexpected gifts are the best, especially when they're of the Pyrex variety!

And the Junk Gods looked down and said Let There be PYREX!

On Saturday morning, I set out bright and early with my yardsale list all mapped out and my cash in hand. 90 minutes and 10 sales later, I came home deflated and disappointed.

The only thing I found worth considering was an old metal watering can, but the seller was firm on his price of $10!-75% of the cash I had, so I told him "No thank you" and headed to my car. He called out to me that several people were interested in it. Seriously? I turned back to him as I climbed into my car and said that perhaps if he wasn't charging so much for it, one of us interested people might have actually purchased it.

Now normally I wouldn't have been so abrupt, but it was a long hot morning and he had it coming. Standing there all smug with his pile of broken things that he wanted an arm and a leg for.

But I digress-

A few minutes after returning home, I realized I was out of 1/2 and 1/2 for the coffee, so I headed back out to the store. I decided to swing by this little junk shop down the road, which is almost never open. Well the junk gods were smiling down on me this day as they were wide open and I walked right in to find Pyrex to my left, Pyrex to my right and Pyrex dead ahead of me!

I played it cool and wandered past it, heading towards the glassware. I wasn't worried about anyone else spotting what I spotted- I was the only person there. I casually picked up a glass and then walked over to a pile of filthy plates, grabbing a small Pyrex bowl as I moved and then sifted through the miscellaneous dishes.

Then I wandered into the lean-to out back and the shed behind that. Nothing too interesting, so I headed back through the winding path of dusty dirty things and towards the exit to find the shop keeper.

As she grabbed a pad and pen (they're real technical with pricing and payments here) I slyly scooped up two more Pyrex pieces -WITH LIDS- and stacked them on the table. "Can you tally me up?" I asked. "I've only got a few dollars on me and don't want to overspend."

"We take checks," she said.

"Oh, I don't believe in checks," I lied back, smiling.

She glanced at the dirty mess I'd stacked up in front of her and says "$10". Inside I'm doing cartwheels, outside I'm cool as a cucumber. *Swoon* 3 lovely Pyrex pieces and a funky 50's glass tumbler for the price of one rusted, dented and rotted watering can.

"I think I just have enough" I replied. We made our exchange, I kept it together long enough to chat with her about my Blue Heaven dishes. Then, as soon as we said our goodbyes, I ran/walked back to the car, anxious to get my beautiful new goodies home.

Here they are in all their disgusting glory. I tell you, they were gross.

The tumbler came complete with a stuck-to-the-inside bug carcass. Yummy.

Actual dirt inside the Snowflake Garland casseroles. What- were these buried in someone's yard and just recently unearthed? Ew!


But of course I saw past all that. I know the beauty that likes beneath that grime!

Look at how they glisten now! I feel like the cat that ate the canary!






Next weekend I'm going to see if I can catch them while they're open and I'm going to check to see if the nesting bowls I spotted last week are still there... I didn't want to seem over zealous!

This Week's Thrifty and Vintage Finds

This week while out thrifting I finally found myself some adorable chairs for my dining room table. We have a long table that seats 12 and yet we own only 5 chairs. I'm constantly searching to find affordable chairs that will blend in with what we currently have. While the two on the sides are fairly new, the center is older and all 3 have the feel of coming from an old farm house, which I love! I got all three for $14.99- TOTAL.

Next up is this pretty little pitcher.

It is handmade and marked "Chris 81" on the bottom- which is also decorated, a touch of flair that I find delightful! Tiger Lilies are my favorite flower, so when I saw this for $.99 cents, I knew it had to come home with me.

I love the vibrancy of the colors and the fact that every inch of it is detailed.

Add a few blue hydrangeas from my neighbor's garden and viola- instant charm!

Finally, I have this bowl that matches my Blue Heaven dishes. I believe this style was made by Fire King, while my dishes were made by Royal China. My godmother gave this to me so cost was FREE, what could be better?!

Vintage goodies... this week it's milk glass!

Squeaking in just in the nick of time (it's still Tuesday!) for Retro Tuesday over at The Crazy Suburban Mom-

This week I have a cute little individual sugar bowl and creamer set. It's milk glass made by Westmoreland Glass. The pattern is called paneled grapes. What I love about this set is the sugar bowl has its lid. I did some searching when I came home with them from the consignment shop and discovered that of the dozen or so pieces listed on eBay not one of them has the lid with it! I guess people must misplace them or break them a lot or something.

In any case, I think it's really cute, but as much as I like it (and was dying to buy a sugar bowl and creamer set) it doesn't match my dishes like I wanted it too. The grapes are just too formal to go with my 50's atomic style stuff. So- this pair will be going to eBay when I get a free minute to list them. I'll open the bidding at $8.99. I hope they find a good home!

Retro Tuesday, visions of aqua!

While reading The Crazy Suburban Mom's blog this morning I came across an awesome post on vintage kitchen appliances, pyrex and aqua- couldn't make me a happier girl! As I briefly mentioned in my post Thanks, Mommy! I collect vintage Blue Heaven dishes. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE old pyrex. Another great goody given to me by my mom was my grandmother's old pyrex mini loaf pans in- you guess it- aqua! They match my dishes perfectly and are so fun to bake in!

Oh! Almost forgot about my nifty vintage canisters- found these on eBay for $10!
